Popcorn, the Old-fashioned Way

Filed under: Food for Thought by Chelsea

old-fashioned popcorn popper

It was raining the other day in San Diego (a more frequent than usual occurrence lately) so Nate’s family and I took the opportunity to watch some TV and make some popcorn – from scratch! My soon-to-be mother-in-law whipped out this contraption and showed me the ropes. It seems that each popcorn popper works a little bit differently, but the concept is the same: heat it up, pour some oil in the bottom, wait for it all to pop, then coat with melted butter and salt. Yum!

I’m sure you could achieve a similar result with a pot/lid over the stove. This popper is really just a big metal bucket over some hot coils.

Whatever you do, be sure to use OIL and not butter to pop the popcorn in. Butter will burn. And as Nate’s mom said, wait until the popping slows to a few seconds between each one – that’s how you know it’s done.

sometimes the old way is the best way, and this is one of those times! I never have success with micro popcorn.

    Visiting from SITS, welcome ;)

Stopping by from SITS to welcome you to the community!

I LOVE old fashioned popcorn poppers. Funny story, I convinced my sister to stick her nose to one when we were little to see if the kernels had all popped. She’s never forgiven me.

    Great blog!

I LOVE making homemade popcorn. I don’t because I have three boys and HOLY GOD if they had to wait that long the sky might fall, but I LOVE it.

You’re too funny. It seems odd to me that this popcorn popper is odd to you. It is very much a family tradition to have this type of popper. All of your future MIL siblings have a similar popper, as do Nana & Papa. Be sure to keep an eye out for one on your thrift shop adventures. I am the keeper of Nathaniel’s great-great-grandmother’s popper. It still makes the BEST popcorn ever.

I remember like it was yesterday, my dad popping popcorn on the stove in a pot with a lid.

Just a little crisco and off it went. The lid always came up about an inch as the popcorn exceeded its capacity!!!

    Great memories :)

Wanted to welcome you to the SITS community!
